Kenya Yara

Origin: Kenya

Tasting Notes: Raisin, Grapefruit
Processing Method: Washed
Roast Level: Lightest

The Yara Estate has been growing coffee in the Kiambu region for nearly a century and it completely shows with this lot. This particular region of Kenya, quite honestly, has the perfect conditions for growing delicious coffees.  High altitudes, rich biodiversity and pristine volcanic soils produce the highly complex coffees Kenya is famous for. Farmers have been growing coffee in this area for quite a while but in 1971 they came together to form the Gatatha Farmers Co. Farmer practices like selective picking and varietal experimentation greatly improved quality and yields.  The introduction of a centralized processing station with the highest quality standards created better prices being paid to the farmers.

Coffee became the foundation of the Yara Estate and helped to expand into other crops. Coffee and Tea are grown at the higher elevations with corn and other fruits grown at lower elevations. Recently, coffee diseases and expanding real estate development have put a strain on farmers in the area. The Yara Estate and all the farmers that belong to the Gatatha Farmers Co. are a shining example of what quality and care can produce but may also not be around forever. We are more than happy to pay high prices for these coffees in the hopes of being able to continue roasting them!
